Whats behind Google Spreadsheet?06/08/2006 12:36 PM
There's been a lot of discussion about
Google Spreadsheet I've registered for the free trial and they gave my gmail account access within 24 hours.
The buzz that I've read ranges from it being an Excel killer to it being an OS killer, to it being just nothing, absolutely nothing. (the "nothing" camp may be just people without vision, its it pretty weak as a spreadsheet, but, It has great potential)
I guess time will tell, but, I've got another prediction, if your knitting club wants to keep track of yarn inventory for the six of you, a google spreadsheet makes really goods sense. (if you really need to share that type of stuff in real time!)
But, what about the corporate environment? That would be a resounding NO! Which of YOUR companies internal data is it okay to store on some remote server (even if you trust google?) . My guess is none!.
For those who are just interested in shaving dollars, openoffice does that, but, still must be maintained and updated from time to time.
For those that are interested in security, openoffice does that, but not without flaws and as it gets used wider, I would expect more of a bullseye on their back.
For those who are interested in low maintainance, IBM is talking about that, but IBM talks for a long, long time before they do anything.
Well, Google is doing it, along with the google calendar, and mail, They bought a word processor company a while back, I expect that they will do something with it, but, it still does not address the question, about the corporate buyer?
